I Need to Be WoW’ed
Posted: June 12, 2013 Filed under: Culture, Internet, Musings | Tags: addiction, culture, entertainment, life, MMO, World of Warcraft, WoW 5 CommentsIt’s been over a year and the cravings are still coming. In fact, of late they’ve been more and more frequent and perhaps even a bit stronger. I think about it at least once a week, and sometimes every day. Sure, it’s worse when I’m bored, but even when I have things going on, it still crosses my mind. “How bad could it be? Just a little bit. I can handle doing just a little bit. I hear they even let you try some for free now.”
Cold turkey sucks.
I’ve quit cigarettes, caffeine, even biting my nails when I was a kid, but somehow the one I seem to be having the most trouble with is World of Warcraft.
Maybe it’s because there’s something missing that I don’t feel like I’m getting in some other way. WoW offers the easy taste of victory early on, with just enough challenge to keep you coming back, and it keeps scaling up to keep the challenge fresh. Sure you can say that about any game, but the folks at Blizzard have it down to a science (quite literally, I’m sure). There’s also a false sense of accomplishment and reward built right in, so you don’t even need to pat yourself on the back; they’ll do it for you. They even let you get something approaching sociability, although the sad truth is they haven’t yet found a way to fix human behavior in an anonymous environment (but they do a better job than most).
Maybe it’s because WoW came to me at the right time in my life (that’s what My Not So Humble Wife suggested). She has a point. When I first started playing World of Warcraft I was feeling lost, alone, and in need of something to make me feel good about myself. I didn’t feel like a success. WoW gave me that. Sure it was an artificial sensation, but Twinkies are full of empty calories and I love them too. WoW gave me so much of that that I spent as much time playing it as I would on a second job, only I paid them for the privilege. Is it a coincidence that a couple months after quitting WoW I started a blog? Not in the slightest. And I still have more free time (most of which I spend with my previously neglected wife).
Maybe it’s because I’ve got an addictive personality. I love to gamble, so I stay away from it. I love to smoke, and I’ve quit more than once (with varying levels of success). I’ll even get hooked on a song and listen to it over and over until I drive the people around me nuts (just ask My Not So Humble Sister; better yet don’t, I don’t need het to be reminded). I’ve thought that if I could find something positive to fill that void (like blogging) it would be enough, but it’s like exercising to get over craving a cigarette. You can only do it so much before you get tired of it, and you still want what you want.
Ultimately I need something to take my mind off of it. I need something that will thrill me, something that will grab and hold my attention long enough to make the cravings go away, I need something so powerful, so wonderful, so fantastic that it’s completely irresistible, to me anyway.
I need to be WoW’ed.
No Secrets Allowed
Posted: June 10, 2013 Filed under: Politics | Tags: America, government, liberty, NSA, politics, society Leave a commentIt’s been all over the news, and it keeps popping up. It certainly seems to be President Obama’s latest headache, and I would argue for good reason: it seems the NSA, despite agency head Gen. Keith Alexander’s protests to the contrary, has been spying on the American people. Oopsie. At the risk of sounding like one of those crazy, far-out there civil libertarians, I have to ask, did anybody not see this coming, for sheer irony if nothing else?
This follows so closely on the heels of other revelations of domestic spying by our own government that even the New York Times has started to call out the Obama administration. While it’s nice to see that there’s something besides the Justice Department seizing phone records that can ruffle the media, it’s almost gilding the lily at this point. If things follow their usual pattern, there will be an outcry, perhaps even a Congressional investigation which will bog down in cheap political point scoring, and both Republicans and Democrats will focus on getting the upper hand in the next election. It almost feels like déjà vu all over again.
Now it’s well known among magicians that the worst thing you can do in front of an audience is to make a big deal about how unremarkable an object is. “Just an average, every day, perfectly normal handkerchief, nothing unusual or exceptional about it.” This draws suspicion, makes people wonder what’s going on here, there must be something hinkey. This goes to President Obama’s insistence that “Unfortunately, you’ve grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that’s at the root of all our problems. Some of these same voices also do their best to gum up the works. They’ll warn that tyranny always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices.” (I have to believe he’s regretting that particular turn of phrase right about now, considering how often it’s been thrown back at him by now.)
The problem is with each new revelation those voices that warn of tyranny sound just a little more like they might be on to something, and I think it’s important to focus on another part of that passage as well: “voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that’s at the root of all our problems.” Note that’s not one specific administration, one particular party, or one named ideology. The current problems began under the Bush administration, or (arguably) even further back. Government writ large, as an entity, is what the warning cry is against. It is Leviathan the voices cry against, the absolute power that Lord Acton warned corrupts absolutely.
The primary purpose of power, before any other, is to aggregate unto itself more power. That power does not then exist simply to exist – it exists to be used. The more people demand security the more security theater we’ll get, but in addition the more (quietly, behind the scenes, when we’re not looking) we’re going to get the things we didn’t want. Will they ultimately make us safer? Marginally, perhaps. But at what cost?
And if anyone ever says “security at any cost”, think very long and hard about the Faustian bargain they’re proposing. There are times in our recent history (for example the 1950s and the McCarthy hearings as well as the Japanese internment during WWII) when we have pursued “security at any cost”, and it is all too easy to see that we are headed down that road again. With very little effort any person of imagination can conjure scenarios of costs that vastly outweigh the benefits that might accrue, even if we were willing to set aside the cherished institutions and beliefs of our country.
Even those without imagination can conjure a vision of what “security at any cost” would look like, and what the down payment would be. All they have to do is watch the news.

Posted: June 7, 2013 Filed under: Musings | Tags: love, marriage, men, women 1 CommentToday I’m going to talk about a subject I have spent the better part of the last decade proving I know absolutely nothing about: marriage.
When I first started dating the woman who was to become my Not So Humble Wife, she told me I was going to marry her one day. I tried to laugh it off, but I have to admit I felt something when she said it. A certain hush, like all the people who had known me my whole life had taken a collective breath and were holding it in fear… Two years later (and after driving through a hurricane to get the engagement ring – I am not making this up), I finally proposed. It was one of the few times in my life I have managed to both surprise and delight her at the same time (she doesn’t usually like surprises).
So why wait so long? Because we wanted to make sure we were making the right choice. We danced around it, talked about it, noodled on it, even joked about it for a long time, both before and after we moved in together. We both knew we were the “forever and ever” types (none of this “til death do us part” crap – watch our wedding video, it’s in our vows), so we had to make sure this was the right thing. I mean hey, we already had everything we wanted “living in sin”, so did we really need to tie the knot?
We talked about all the things everybody says you should talk about and so many couples don’t because they’re so sure that love is enough. We learned one thing very fast when we moved in together: love is not enough. No amount of love in the world is enough. If nothing else you also need patience. But we also talked about the rest of it. We talked about finances (we agree broadly on how to handle them), we talked about religion (different but compatible), we even talked about kids (she likes them with a wine sauce; I prefer a side of fries).
At the end of I all though we realized that those things, while important to having a successful marriage, are not the reasons why you get married.
Why get married? Because ideally you found someone who makes you just a little bit happier. Most of life is lived in the spectrum of mediocre. When you find the right person, you live most of life at mediocre +1. The good times are just a bit better; the bad times are not so bad. They don’t “complete you”, they don’t “make life perfect”, and they don’t “give you a reason to live”. If you need that, you need therapy. That’s no kind of weight to put on someone else’s shoulders. A good spouse is a partner, someone who will support you when you need it but will also challenge you when you need calling out. They give you a desire and an incentive to be a better person, in whatever way that means to you.
At least, that’s what I’ve found so far.
Man versus Nature
Posted: June 3, 2013 Filed under: Humor | Tags: allergies, humor, nature 4 CommentsIt is with a sad and heavy heart that I have to finally deliver the news that I am at war. It is a war that I did not seek, but it is a war that must be fought. It is a war that was declared long ago by an enemy too numerous to be counted and too vast to be avoided. I speak, of course, of Mother Nature.
It was bad enough when I was a child. Back then all I had to contend with was a poison ivy allergy bad enough to send me to the emergency room on at least one occasion, that occasion resulting in the spread of a rash from a small patch no bigger than a nickel on my ankle to cover my entire body… in three days. I’m still that heavily allergic. But I was willing to give up the dubious “pleasure” of hikes in the woods if Nature would leave me alone in the sanctuary of the streets that I call home.
For a while it seemed we had a truce, particularly in the summers of my youth as my Not So Humble Sister would get swarmed by mosquitos and I would be ignored (which may or may not have had something to do with her propensity for sunbathing and sports and mine for video games), although there were intermittent lapses in our détente (particularly the Full Body Sunburn Incident of 1988), but there were mistakes on both sides and I was willing to forgive and forget. Lately, however, it seems that we have approached the point of no return.
It started out small. I noticed a bug bite here and there. Nothing much, but I had never really gotten them much before. Then last summer I became a major target for mosquitos. I also started noticing a sudden encroachment of ivy around my house. Maybe it’s the poisonous kind, maybe it’s not, but would you take the chance? The final insult came when I started to notice that my winter cold was hanging around longer, and would actually get worse as spring progressed. My Not So Humble Wife suggested I try taking some of her OTC medicine, and it worked. My god! Allergies! My oldest foe had finally resorted to biological weapons!
This, then, is the final straw. It’s clearly spelled out in every international agreement and treatise on war that there are some things that are simply beyond the bounds of acceptability. I’m tired of being on the defensive. I have no choice; I have to take the war back to Nature.
Even though large tracts of America and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of Mother Nature and all the odious apparatus of Her green rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in the yards, we shall fight on the sidewalks and the walking paths, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our health, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the school grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.
Thank you, God bless, and pass the Allegra.
Bobapalooza 2013: The World Is Not Enough
Posted: May 31, 2013 Filed under: Bobapalooza, Culture | Tags: culture, festival, music 1 CommentThe time has come at last for the next installment of the greatest music festival that never was: Bobapalooza 2013! This year we’re throwing the doors wide open to allow ANYONE to nominate their favorite bands. World tour? Not even. It’s bigger than that. It’s the whole internet! THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH.
So here’s the deal: I’ve been sharing my musical past with all of you for a while now, and it’s time to broaden my horizons. I’m looking for new music, and I’m hoping you, yes, YOU will provide it. Specifically, I’m giving ANYONE the chance to get me to listen to the music you love.
Here’s how it works: imagine you’ve heard about a music festival coming to town, and on the list of bands is THE band. The one that makes you say, “I don’t care what the ticket price is, I will sell my own children if I have to, I MUST BE THERE.” Any band, any era, living or dead, still together or not. Pick your favorite song and post it to the Facebook event page for Bobapalooza 2013.
But wait, there’s more! Some of you may remember the Stage of Legends from 2011 and 2012. It’s back once again, and there are five brand-spanking new Legend spots up for grabs! That’s right, not only can you nominate your favorite garage band for the main stage, you can nominate your favorite garage band to be a Bobapalooza Legend!
Now the rules:
MAIN STAGE
1. You have to pick a band you would sit through the entire set. Not “I love this song!” I want “I love this band!”
2. Yes, you can post as many as you like, but really, how many bands are THAT good?
3. If you intend to post more than one, please don’t spam the feed (more than 10 bands a day from one person is a bit much. I do have a life. And see 1 & 2.)
4. If you post it I will listen to it, so please, be gentle.
5. Please note that this is a Main Stage entry.
6. Any band that made it to the show in 2011 or 2012 (main stage or Stage of Legends) will not be considered for the main stage this year.
STAGE OF LEGENDS
1. All of the rules for Main Stage apply, only even more. I mean, think about 1 & 2 especially. These guys are supposed to be LEGENDS.
2. Testify! Tell me (and the world!) why you think this band deserves to be named a Legend. For an idea of the sort of thing I have in mind look at the write up from Bobapalooza 2011 or Bobapalooza 2012.
3. Any band that made it to the Stage of Legends in 2011 or 2012 will not be considered this year, however, Main Stage acts may still be nominated.
And remember, just as Master Yoda told us, “Do, or do not; there is no try.” Once a band has been nominated for the Stage of Legends, they are no longer in the running for the main stage. The whole point of the SoL is to give a fair shot to lesser known bands. If you think your favorite band has what it takes to compete with the big boys, put ‘em in, but don’t hedge your bets. Go big or stay home.
Starting June 15 I will decide who the winners are, and I will post my fifteen favorite bands for the main stage and the five act Stage of Legends. I will also give credit to the first person who suggested them, so get in early for your shot at fame!
If you still have questions, please feel free to comment on this blog post or on the Facebook event page. Insightful questions will receive careful, well-thought out answers. Off-hand questions will get off-hand answers. Questions that prove you didn’t bother to read everything I already wrote will be met with shame and ridicule, not necessarily in that order.
For those about to rock: we salute you!

Bobapalooza: It Became a Legend…
Posted: May 29, 2013 Filed under: Bobapalooza, Culture | Tags: culture, festival, music 4 CommentsAfter the success of the first Bobapalooza, there was actually demand for a second. To my great surprise (and more than a little gratitude) I actually had friends asking me when I’d be doing it again, and some folks were even planning ahead. Who was I to say no? And so… _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Well, here we are at last. Like the man once said, “Let the battle cry go forth: GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT.” You hoped for it, you cried for it, by the ones and twos you demanded it, and now at last it’s back: Bobapalooza! Only this time, it’s 2012, and that can only mean one thing – Bigger. Louder. Faster. (Okay, that’s three things. This is music, not math.)
So here’s the deal: I’m looking for new music, and I’m hoping Facebook will provide it. Specifically, I’m giving all my Facebook friends the chance to get me to actually listen to all the music they’ve tried to expose me to over the years I’ve steadfastly ignored up to now.
So here’s how it works: imagine you’ve heard about a music festival coming to town, and on the list of bands is THE band. The one that makes you say, “I don’t care what the ticket price is, I will sell my own children if I have to, I MUST BE THERE.” Any band, any era, living or dead, still together or not. Pick your favorite song and post it to my Facebook wall, and please note that it’s for Bobapalooza 2012.
But wait, there’s more! Some of you may remember the Stage of Legends from 2011. It’s coming back this year, with a twist: this time, YOU get to decide! That’s right, not only can you nominate your favorite garage band for the main stage, you can nominate your favorite garage band from Seattle circa early 1990’s to be a Bobapalooza Legend!
Now the rules:
MAIN STAGE
1. You have to pick a band you would sit through the entire set. Not “I love this song!” I want “I love this band!”
2. Yes, you can post as many as you like, but really, how many bands are THAT good?

2. Testify! Tell me (and the world!) why you think this band deserves to be named a Legend. For an idea of the sort of thing I have in mind [insert shameless self-promotion here] look at the write up from Bobapalooza 2011 (https://www.facebook.com/notes/bob-bonsall/bobapalooza-2011-the-lineup/10150218756477042)
3. Any band that made it to the Stage of Legends last year will not be considered this year, however, Main Stage acts may still be nominated.
“Do, or do not; there is no try.” Once a band has been nominated for the Stage of Legends, they are no longer in the running for the main stage. The whole point of the SoL is to give a fair shot to lesser known bands. If you think your favorite band has what it takes to compete with the big boys, put ‘em in, but don’t hedge your bets. Go all the way or don’t go at all.
Starting June 15 I will decide who the winners are, and I will post my fifteen favorite bands for the main stage and the five act Stage of Legends (yes, I am heavily influenced by the sadly departed HFStival. Sue me.) I will also give credit to the first person who suggested them, so get in early for your shot at fame!
If you still have questions, please feel free to comment in this thread or on my Facebook Wall. Insightful questions will receive careful, well-thought out answers. LET THE GAMES BEGIN!
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The response was, if anything, even more overwhelming than the previous year. But don’t just take my word for it when you can… well, you can still take my word for it:
Bobapalooza 2012: The Lineup!
First I want to thank all of my wonderful contributors: Chuck Stewart, Corey Carpenter, Erin Wendt, Janet Currie Konigsberg, Jenn Stevens Booth, Jennifer Bonsall Zetlin, Kae Bieber, Leigh Bonsall, Matt Foster, Micah Stromberg, Mike Reinemann, Myke Harryson, Nayden Hitchev, RL Mirabal, Scott Soper, and Yillah Natalia. With over 100 acts to choose from, this year was amazing and wonderful, in terms of both talent and diversity. The truth is I could have picked at random and still had a great lineup, I had so many great acts to choose from, and I thank you all for that.
But that’s not what you came for. You came to see –
THE BOBAPALOOZA 2012 LINEUP!!!
Ahem. Sorry about that. I get a little excited sometimes. Anyway, let’s start with THE STAGE OF LEGENDS. While I had a lot of great acts to choose from, in the end I decided to go with the five acts that, for my money, have most changed the way that we approach music. Either directly or indirectly, through their influence they have made a mark on the world of music that is as lasting as it is undeniable. They are:
Bob Marley (nominated by Leigh Bonsall) – How do you know someone is a legend? Well, it never hurts to have even Eric Clapton covering their work. As Leigh put it, “He’s Known worldwide and started not only a music movement but a lifestyle.”
David Bowie (nominated by Kae Bieber) – Who is David Bowie? What year is it? This man raised self-reinvention to an art form before most of us even knew who we were the first time. Kae nailed it when she said “he is a music and writing genius, gets hotter with age and he’s not a shabby actor either.”
Michael Jackson (nominated by Scott Soper) – The King of Pop. Over the course of a tragic and tragically short life MJ defined and re-defined pop music again and again. Like the legendary phoenix, he became even more renowned after his passing, and as Scott noted, ” if dying is the best thing he ever did for his career, is that not the definition of a legend?”
The Cure (nominated by Janet Currie Konigsberg) – They may not have created goth rock, but they defined it, mostly by refusing to be defined by it. The Cure have always had a distinct, unique sound, that Janet sums up best: “A band like the Cure often goes overlooked when speaking of legends, yet are loved by many and have often played a huge part in many Gen X’ers lives. They came on the scene over 30 years ago and honestly, you couldn’t suck cool air in the 80’s or 90’s without taking in some of their particles. The best part? They still sound amazing today! The Cure: the band that made you want to slice your wrists, yet kept you from doing it simply because you wanted to keep listening.”
N.W.A. (nominated by Scott Soper) – Ice Cube or Dr. Dre could make a run for the Stage of Legends all by themselves. Add in Eazy-E, MC Ren, and DJ Yella, as well as an album that changed not only the way we view music but arguably had a major impact on society as well, and this was an easy pick.
And now, the MAIN STAGE! I expect this one to be even more controversial than the Stage of Legends. I had to turn away a lot of great bands, some because they just weren’t to my taste (hey, it’s BOBapalooza), and others because there are only fifteen places on the stage and I couldn’t put everyone up there I wanted to. But enough hedging. Here’s the lineup you’ve been waiting for:
Gorillaz (nominated by Corey Carpenter)
Silversun Pickups (nominated by Kae Bieber)
Amadou and Mariam (nominated by Yillah Natalia)
Rancid (nominated by Jenn Stevens Booth)
Lindsey Sterling (nominated by Leigh Bonsall)
The Band Perry (nominated by Erin Wendt)
The Airborne Toxic Event (nominated by Matt Foster)
Manchester Orchestra (nominated by Janet Currie Konigsberg)
Grimes (nominated by Mike Reinemann)
Deadmau5 (nominated by Erin Wendt)
Fun (nominated by Leigh Bonsall)
Glen Hansard (nominated by RL Mirabal)
Muse (nominated by Matt Foster)
Foxy Shazam (nominated by Micah Stromberg)
Adele (nominated by Erin Wendt)
Thanks everybody, and we’ll see you again next year!
Come back tomorrow for the Official Bobapalooza 2012 Playlist™, and Friday for the big Bobapalooza announcement you’ve been waiting for!
